@SpencerSDH it was projection. She used him as a surrogate son and comforted him, while he used her as a surrogate mother to find comfort, thus allowing both of them to move on and stop being held back by their grief. There is also symbolism in a physical act that can produce life, being used to move past the loss of life, as well as the parallels of "returning the the womb" that sex can have when the participants are in mother and child roles, surrogate or otherwise.
