Did something happen behind the scenes in order for Umedama to make this? Did he get in legal trouble or he did this on a bizarre whim?

This is pretty much a redraw of a Pokémon doujjn he made a few years ago in 2023, but with the clear parody aspects removed, making all the characters be original. Unlike that work, I see Umedama didn't publish this under the Tsurikichi Doumei circle, maybe it has something do with that?

Very strange indeed. Misty/Kasumi is now "Azumi", while Ash/Satoshi is now "Satou".
Similarly, Pokemon Master was changed to "Bakemon Mentor (バケモンメンター)" or something.

If I had to hazard a guess, it might have something to do with the Palworld vs Nintendo lawsuit?
Reminds me of that strange period of Mogudan doujins with Not-Quite-Rei-from-Evangelion.
