Toy Box represents a revealing case for cheesecake pin-up doujinshi as well as in its rise and decline during the mid to late 1980s. Many artists increasingly adopted the aesthetics of glamour photography of the 'forbidden books' era - doujins that were based on vynil books (ビニ本, bini-bon). These publications were often sold sealed in polyethylene or OPP bags, preventing browsing prior to purchase and reinforcing their aura of exclusivity and taboo. Although not always explicitly erotic in orientation, the circle’s output was distinguished less by narrative content than by its emphasis on polished illustration and graphic design.

Toy Box was led by the illustrator and animator Tamaki Kōji (玉置晃司), who also worked under the pen name Monotarinu (ものたりぬ). Several core members of the circle were similarly active in the professional animation and illustration industries, a fact that is reflected in the unusually high production values of its publications. The books were printed on quality stock and often supplemented with full color fold-out posters, postcards, bookmarks, and other inserts.

The volume discussed here is not the inaugural issue of Toy Box, but appears to be the final issue. Other surviving examples show that the group had quite a bit of money to finance elaborate print runs and premium inserts. This particular compilation includes two large-format posters of notable print quality. By the mid-1980s, the market for this style of doujin had become increasingly saturated.

Toy Box’s final known release was Moero Toy Box, issued in 1986, however, this was possibly released under a different circle as this book concludes its main imprint. Following the dissolution of the circle, Tamaki Kōji continued to publish original works independently until approximately 1989, suggesting that the end of Toy Box reflected changing market conditions rather than a complete withdrawal from illustration.

Known contributors to Toy Box include Tamaki Kōji (also known as M.O, MO, MONO, and Monotarinu), Sakamoto Michiru (坂本みちる), Nakayama Emiri (中山えみり), Mikeneko Chiya (千夜 イラスト), along with additional participants such as Kasukabe Koshigaya, Ran, MS, Koboku, Sagawa, and Enzaki.

★Additionals:

★From the editor:

1. 原稿募集中 — Accepting Submissions!
The editorial department is currently actively recruiting people who can draw illustrations.

It looks as though we may soon be able to establish an editorial branch office (not a distribution branch), so those who have been hoping to join the much-admired T.B. branch office may soon have their chance!

Additionally, once the branch office is established, we are also considering producing anime. Those who are interested would do well to apply as soon as possible. (The four-character positions are proving quite difficult to fill!) Applicants should send two or three sheets of their work to the editorial office at the address below. We look forward to hearing from you.

We are also considering what to do going forward, and have decided to dissolve T.B-M once and for all. This is because we intend to establish a new editorial organizational structure, which will naturally require a new circle name. Therefore, we would like to solicit suggestions from our readers for the name of the new editorial department. Please send your suggestions to the editorial office on a postcard, clearly indicating your address, name, and proposed name for the new editorial department.

One person will receive a first-edition copy of M.O-SPECIAL as a gift.

And one more thing: using four-character words would be good, too, although that would make the work more difficult on the other hand.

2. バックナンバー — Back Issues
Back issues are all gone. There are no plans to reprint them, and we cannot do anything about that.

However, we will do our best to accommodate you with future issues of TOY BOX.

That said, there may still be some copies of the posters issued quite a while ago (30 yen each) left at the free paper distribution rack. Those who are feeling energetic should ask the shopkeeper.

This is a private request, but I will buy TOY BOX-1, from Hokkaido, at its original retail price. It has been sitting around the editorial department, collecting dust.

This is a particularly important note: although this is designated TOY BOX 5, it is the eleventh issue in the publication's overall numbering sequence and is explicitly identified as the real final issue.
