These are gorgeous edits but warhammer40k models will always look like dopey children's toys, because that's exactly what they are.

edit:

@virado That's true. Don't get me wrong, I like this gallery and I'm a big fan of the franchise. I was only pointing out that no amount of digital manipulation can make these models not look like toys. Casts are difficult to make, so they end up with vehicle models that look like lego blocks and character models that look ugly and deformed.

Very nice manipulations. And actually Gahasa as much as GW would like it to be so children are not the majority of the customer base for war hammer. Although the sales push is towards kids due to parents buying presents, Warhammer began as a game for adults, and still is.

Believe me when I say that Warhammer 40K can go into a more mature setting. That Games Workshop had yet to do so is because it wants to have kids buying its products (and keep those irritating right-wing conservatives off their case). Because let's be frank - there is immense potential for WH40K to go into parallel genres such as horror, erotica and occult. It ain't about war, war and more war - that gets boring eventually.

The Emperor protects. Unless you're the tank driver in #32 then The Emperor Protects Somebody Else.

GW's vehicle designs draw heavily from the armor used in WWI, which by modern standards lends to the very blocky look. The caricature nature of many of the models has toned down over the years and is dependent on the player's chosen force. Chances are GW skirts past the parental radar purely by the benefit of SM, CSM, and Tau's "toy" appearance. I'm sure that if some parents actually read the 'fluff' around the 'toy painting game' their little Timmy is into they'd shit bricks. Seriously. Tau: Communists. SM: Jihadist super-soldiers. IG: Commissars.

@Midnight Angel It already has. The RPG Dark Heresy focuses on the more terrifying, mysterious and at times even Lovecraftian aspects of 40K. And frankly I find 40K to be far more mature than any other half-way decent sci-fi setting.

That are great pictures.
Never did I think about photographing miniatures that way.
