I think the whole thing about her 'being old' kinda goes with the Japanese saying that a woman is like a Christmas Cake; after the 25th, she's 'no good'.

In other words, if a lady isn't married by the time she turns 25, she's really not worth marrying/dating. So the lady being in her 30s and not married is... welll, y'know. So I think a lot of this is a sort of reflection on that mentality.
