Regarding the sacrifice, I wonder if he volunteered or was dragged tooth and nail into it?

Of course here's an issue with this: what are Shinto gods doing participating in a ritual that involves shedding blood and eating human flesh? Seems kinda blasphemous since, iirc, things like blood are impure in Shinto.

He was forced into it by the village elders because he had no living relatives who would grieve, so the impact of his loss on the village at large would be minimal. It's a painful sort of calculus to make, but there you go. You are correct, in that Shinto holds that blood is impure in the extreme, along with death, and that the divine is lessened by their presence. Historically, Shinto priests refused to even perform funerals, so great was their distaste for the dead; Buddhist priests took over that role for them. It's disingenuous that a human can become divine through an act of unwilling blood sacrifice and cannibalism in the mythology of Shinto, to say nothing of Sanae's whiplash of a motive, but that's another matter entirely.

I usually like this artist, I really do, but this one just felt grimdark for the sake of it, with no thought really put into it.

And here I am, thinking that I've got the concepts of "offering" all wrong and at the end it would turn out to be a happy story.
Noope.

@lulius I know replying to this 12 years later is pointless, but I don't want to leave the viewpoint of this being needlessly grimdark uncontested.

Firstly, the sacrifice is made to the tengu, not to the Moriya shrine. The Moriya shrine is invited to partake so that it doesn't appear the tengu are snubbing them. Kanako and Suwako are also not going to refuse to partake, as that would be an insult to the tengu whom they have to have a working relationship with on the mountain. Suwako and Kanako are also based on Gods/legends that would predate the concept of Shintoism. The Suwa shrine is also arguably connected to both human death and meat eating, as Kanako is a god of war and the Suwa cult ate meat during a time when many did not due to the influence of Buddhism.

Sanae's motivation was not a whiplash, it was her coming to terms with the path that she has taken. She doesn't want the kid to be sacrificed, but becomes able to understand that it WILL happen, as it is an established tradition and an important practice to maintain the balance of Gensokyo. Knowing the death of the child is inevitable, Sanae decides to participate as was offered to her to become an Arahitogami, as that was the path she accepted the moment she came to Gensokyo in the first place. Obviously, the eating of a human making you into a God into Shintoism isn't some solid fact, but Arahitogami have no historically standard way of coming to be. Her power to see the Gods alone would have likely made her an Arahitogami at a point in history. In this work, the point was that her acceptance of an offering was her official crossing of the line.

Also, the darkness of the portrayal of the sacrifice of the child, I believe, is the only way such a thing should be protrayed. Japan almost certainly had human sacrifices during the Age of the Gods, as many cultures across the globe did at some point. Hitobashira is a rumored human sacrifice practice in Japan that was spoken of up to the unification of Japan.
