Character Design/Animation Director: 井関修一 [Iseki Shūichi]
Images and Video located: http://animatorexpo.com/mememe/

Uploading to promote the video. Please note it involves some nudity and guro/cannibalism. The latter two are not in this gallery. I would appreciate it if someone could assist with tagging. Though I've read the ToS and wiki, I'm afraid I may not get this.

I'm sorry to ask but does anyone know what the video was about? It went a bit over my head. Still amazing though!

To me, it seems like the video is about him breaking up with a girl and really regretting it, but by the time he tried to get back with her, it was too late and the break up had changed her into a real maneater

@bigdemon123:
Just my interpretation of it, but it seemed like it was about a guy who had come to regret doing something to a girl he was close to, probably a girlfriend. It does look like it may have been a break up, as the person doing it in a lot of media tends to show that sort of uncomfortable disdain for the one who didn't expect it. The whole shrugging off and walking away without trying to comfort. At the time, it looked like Shuu was pretty uncaring, but what he did had ended up hurting himself too. Obviously he misses her and wants to go back, but it's too late, he's already done the damage.

Meme, the character or artist he liked (noting the fantasy, TV/Live Picture Frame, and poster in his room), looks a little like Hana imo. I think she could represent his desires, while the transformed Hana is the form of his regrets and the possible backlash his actions had. He looks to his desires for enjoyment, and by the way the picture was glitching maybe tried to erase his past memories with them, playing the escapist. However, he was unable to do so, and the Meme/desires were always subervient/second to the transformed Hana ( just a form of her that could be mass produced, linked to the original by the strings)

His regrets take control of his desires and turn them against him. He tries to reject the both of them, even violently, but they turn his attack back on him ten fold. In the end, he is unable to escape, and is literally consumed by both his regrets and desires. I think the end of the video, where his head shot is exactly the same as the beginning, suggests once again this is all symbolic and he's come to feel dead inside, unable to find solace in what other things he liked. (Meme, the Evangelion dolls crawling on and holding him as transformed Hana drowned him.)

Also guessing this is a lot of symbolism for MCs internal probs considering the several Evangelion references. (Dolls/Suit name/feel of it) Shuichi was the animator for Eva Q/KlK/PaSwG and Anno's running around w/ the animator project.

Controversy aside, it's fantastic. From what I've understood of people talking about this, MC got NTR'd and falls in to the trap of 2D escapism, depression and struggle against his inner demons. Supposedly this is a preview of a show airing next year.

@Thanados: Mc got ntr by his girlfriend so he dumb her? if so i don't see what is the point of regret over her.

If so then the meaning of the video was like "Don't regret after dumb a girlfriend who ntr you. You're going to feel dead inside if you regret."

OR "Don't dumb your girlfriend even when she ntr you, you're going to feel dead inside whenever remember about her. So don't break up with your girlfriend even if she ntr you."

NTR ?
Where are people getting that from ?

There wasn't a single other person in the video besides the two of them, not even during the flashback. I've seen an alternative thoughtpiece speaking of it of being a satirical piece speaking against escapism and oversexualization irl and out. I think that, or the regrets dominating desires (which may have been a reason for their initial breakup, her "failure" to live up to something he wanted and his realization that the standard he did desire, the open sexuality of Meme, was not actually going to make him happy), are much more likely.

I think it's interesting if it is the latter, considering there aren't a whole lot of things in media that comment on this duality some expect from their partners. Voluptuous innocence constantly juxtaposed with a wild sexuality, all coming from one person in a harmony that is difficult if not unrealistic to maintain. Come to think of it, that could also explain how alien it all looked when he got closer to them and saw underneath.
