While the violence between officers seems pretty excessive, after reading Shigeru Mizuki's manga telling his experience in the IJA, it makes me believe that this is a pretty straightforward documentary. Though because it's telling about the Pacific Theatre, it will lean more to feel than to horror and depictions of war crimes (thought there are war crimes, it's not as pronounced as things like the concentration camps and horrific bio weapons).
