Lack of oxygen can damage your brain, you know

well, anyone who willingly doing this thing maybe already brain-damaged first

I have doubts about the effectiveness of this training method.

I want to say, I'm glad it didn't turn into snuff, but honestly, at this point, knowing that none of the girls actually died didn't make me feel a lot better either.

@ maxogami

Your typesetting could need some work but it looks good otherwise. Thanks for translating

Between 30-180 seconds of oxygen deprivation, you may lose consciousness.

At the one-minute mark, brain cells begin dying.
At three minutes, neurons suffer more extensive damage, and lasting brain damage becomes more likely.
At five minutes, death becomes imminent.
At 10 minutes, even if the brain remains alive, a coma and lasting brain damage are almost inevitable.
At 15 minutes, survival becomes nearly impossible.

@fronttide
That's what I've been told, but I've also heard that it's possible to hold your breath longer than that underwater with proper training. Something about your metabolism slowing down. Wasn't there a guy who could dive for like 10 minutes just by holding his breath?

Fronttide is waaaaay off when it comes to the actual mechanics of human respiration. For just one example of a random scrub reporter receiving minimal training in free diving and achieving 3m41s with no ill effects, see: http://tierneylab.blogs.nytimes.com/2008/04/22/kicking-the-oxygen-habit/

Wow, thanks for translating this! <3 Great stuff, and any more you can do would be very highly appreciated.

BTW, for the other commenters: all of the negative effects on brain cells start happening when your body can't supply your brain with oxygen, and when that starts to happen, you will pass out. So whether you hold your breath for 1 minute or 10, if you are conscious the whole time, you will not have brain damage. Don't try what you see here at home though...

@Nomake Wan It's not so much that he's wrong, as it is that he's basing his estimates on someone who's completely untrained in breath holding.

All of these girls can hold their breath for longer, due to training. And considering they're in one of H2O's things, they're probably effectively immortal anyways. xD

@Nomake Wan: It's not wrong, it's just that holding your breath is not the same as oxygen deprivation.

Holding your breath does not immediately deprive the brain of oxygen, as it can continue to function using oxygen already in the bloodstream and in the air still in the lungs for a short period (just like all of your other organs and muscles). However, once this oxygen is depleted below a critical density, unconsciousness sets in (assuming the breathing reflex is suppressed until this point). At this point, the brain is now being deprived of oxygen as the blood oxygen level is simply too low (and low oxygen may also lead to cardiac arrest), and the symptoms mentioned by fronttide start taking effect.

Trained swimmers and divers can suppress their breathing reflex for a longer period and have the experience necessary to avoid wasteful movements that needlessly deplete blood oxygen levels, but they are no more immune to oxygen deprivation than a normal person. The breathing techniques they use are designed to reduce carbon dioxide levels to suppress the breathing reflex longer, but it doesn't actually affect their oxygen levels and can be dangerous as the breathing reflex is based on carbon dioxide levels, not oxygen levels. So with abnormally low carbon dioxide levels, the breathing reflex may be suppressed to the point where blood oxygen levels fall into below critical levels and the swimmer lapses into unconsciousness.
