I've been curious for years about what the fucking fuck is actually happening in this book, so I decided to translate it (with assistance from multiple websites and dictionaries), figure it out myself, then post the results here. I'm already finding stuff I had no clue about before: did anyone outside of Japan know about the Redland until now?

Obviously this isn't even remotely finished, but I want to put up as much as I can now. Shirow's annotations, divided between world-building and notes on his thought and production process, are REALLY FUCKING EXTENSIVE, and translating them all is going to be a pain -- but a man who puts this much thought and effort even into his porn has to get some kind of respect. (The non-horse-related stuff will have to come in a later update.)

UPDATED: Fuck it, there wasn't a whole lot of translation to do here, so I'm getting to the main part everybody remembers from this. There will be more to come -- eventually including, I hope, the rest of Shirow's notes. You have (and I say this as high-functioning myself) absolutely NO IDEA the level of autism I'm about to uncover here.

What a weird work. It feels like more of an artbook retrospective than an actual commercial product. How he could be proud of the dogshit CG of the early 2000s and the incomprehensible in media explanations for the variation pages after the widespread appeal of his previous works is baffling. The early pages have only like 1 unique panel for every 4 pages. The format is awful. Just give us the full pages of each variation. It's not until 2004 that he's able to give a full page of unique panels and that only lasts 2 pages. Oddly based on the dates some panels were drawn 2 years earlier than previous ones. The horse monsters are even worse looking but 50 pages into the set you get the first actual sex scene of two.
Page 50 it actually looks like she has multiple pairs.
Page 52 it appears one horse monster's head is emerging from his thigh.
Page 53 His legs!
Page 57 Again the dates tell a more interesting story than anything else. He spent 2 years trying to figure out how he was going to draw horse monsters milking and fucking a cowgirl.
Page 64 He actually seems a little self-aware here about the glossy skin and recycling. He doesn't acknowledge that the paneling and word bubbles are so bad, it needs an interpretation page though.
Page 66 2011, 7 years after the initial publication...still hasn't learned how to do cel shading but at least he's drawing full pages with unique panels.
And despite all that fanfare, it just abruptly ends like he was sick of it.

I think I understand the method to his madness for the last 25 years now. He draws low effort 2 page pinups of random girls posing for monthly magazines, and 2 years later he makes sets of those plastered in CG nightmare scapes. Over the years he reuses some of those designs and themes and eventually he has enough random pages to compile together into an incoherent story.
